ENGINE 17 HISTORY

-

-

Located in the Brookland section of Washington DC, this building was probably influenced by the mostly Catholic neighborhood. Engine 17 moved here on April 22, 1905, but its firehouse was constructed in 1902 for Chemical Engine Company4, which was disbanded three years later. The architect was likely Snowden Ashford, who also designed Engine 25's firehouse. The four story tower serves as space for drying hose and as a watch tower for fires. Towers predominated during the electric period, likely because of concerns over failure of the fire alarm telegraph system.

On August 19, 2005 Engine 17's quarters closed for major renovations. A complete rebuilding of the inside and an addition of  16' x 25' on the rear of the firehouse was added. The project is close to completion with an expected return to quarters in April 2007, upon returning Engine 17 will have another first, a Medic unit assigned to the house known as Medic 17.
